Christmas Morning, O-Dark-30

I've mentioned before that my boys do not sleep in, ever.  This goes double for Christmas morning.  The rustles and whispers and bumps started at about 5:45AM, and the entirety of the gifting extravaganza was over before the sun came up!

I, non-morning person that I am, am currently nursing my third cup of coffee and trying to jump-start my nervous system.  Thing One is learning to fly his new remote-controlled helicopter, Thing Two is playing a new DS game, Petunia has Legos scattered from one end of the kitchen to the other, and the dog is hiding under the dining room table with her new peanut butter bone.  (She doesn't like either the helicopter or Petunia's new battery-operated, noise-making kitten toy!)  Himself is in the office updating and charging the family's new electronic devices and giving me grief for clogging the wifi with my blogging.

It's going to be a quiet day.  Since the recent church-related drama resulted in our having to go to Mass last night instead of this morning, there is no rush to get moving...we have nothing on the agenda but my in-laws coming for an early dinner later.

Peace on earth, and goodwill to all.  Wishing you a very merry Christmas.

  2. Long story. In brief, our church is a small, simple satellite of a big fancy church in the next town. Pastor of both churches decided abruptly this year that there would only be Christmas Masses at big fancy church, despite 30-yr plus history at small church. Expressions of concern from parishioners of small church were met with disdain and communication only from annoying flunky of pastor's and only after the fact. Bottom line: mostly a business management problem. Pastor has lousy people skills and is very poor at communicating. Had to go to big church for Mass as only option in parish and was left with bad taste in mouth and reinforced previous dislike of pastor. Not a huge deal, but I feel community with the small church folks and the priest who serves there and that part of Christmas was taken from us this year. Drama centers around whether this is a first step toward closing the small church. If so, we'll be looking for a new parish.

    1. Oh, that's really too bad and unfair.

I remember when they closed a ton of churches in New Orleans after Katrina - so many of my friends were so upset, as it was churches they'd been born in, married in, children christened in. There too, I think a good bit of the problem was the disdainful and not understanding way it was handled. We cant always get what we want, but we do always deserve to be heard and respected.

    2. Exactly. The lack of respect and opportunity to be heard is the problem. The decision itself I can understand for practical reasons, I really can. If the pastor had come before the fact, explained the situation and said "this is the only way we can get the schedule to work," I think it would have been fine. It was just handled very poorly.

Yeah, It's Been A While

These days, a lot of what happens in my life relates to my kids, and as they get older I am less comfortable sharing their stories.  I will ...
