I Did It!

30 days of NaBloPoMo, 30 posts.  Very few of them actually involved the official prompts, but never mind: zero days missed.

The funny thing is that I post pretty much every day anyway, but something about having to post every day felt a lot like pressure.  And we all know how much I like doing things that I feel like I'm being told to do or that I have to do (wonder where Thing Two gets that from??  Hmm...) which is completely and totally irrational given that this was a 100% voluntary activity.  Welcome to my head...it's a scary place sometimes.  I probably need professional help.

Anyway.

After the activity of the past few days, today was very quiet.  My menfolk collectively went out and sawed down a Christmas tree of quite impressive girth (we are calling it "portly.")  I sorted two kids' worth of closets and drawers, did about four loads of laundry, ran some errands, and cleaned the house a bit.  As a reward for all my labors, I am currently perched on the edge of the hearth and savoring the feel of a lovely warm fire on my back.  Ahhh...peace at last.

  1. Yeah - you didn't last too long with the provided prompts. ;) I think our "Don't tell me what to do!" is very similar.

Have you read "Born on a Blue Day"? I only just started it (on recommendation from a friend), and immediately thought you'd really enjoy it.

    1. Let me know what you think after you read it - I'll be quite curious. It's a quick read and doesn't require great attention.

Reasons I think you'll like it: first, when he talks about making his first friend (the author has Aspberger's), it reminds me a good deal of how you feel about Thing Two and friends - the relief, the joy. Finding the people who accept with differences. And also, because this guy (he's only 28 or so still) is so articulate about his auditory processing issues - I'm sure you understand it all, but to hear somebody articulate it is really interesting. And, I know you worry a lot about Thing Two, and to read this book about this guy who really just finds his way - it's really great, and also makes me appreciate people with these types of disabilities so much more than I already did. Demystifying, humanizing, and very matter-of-fact - and how he writes about falling in love is so sweet.

The author is very different from Thing Two, but I think you and his parents could form a very good support group. His parents and his teachers have been awesome. Very heartening.

  3. Going to the library in the next couple of days...I'll look for it! Does sound like it would be right up my alley. And I'm always very happy to read about success stories for kids born with significant obstacles to overcome!

Yeah, It's Been A While

These days, a lot of what happens in my life relates to my kids, and as they get older I am less comfortable sharing their stories.  I will ...
